The Graduate School for Library, Information and Media, University of Tsukuba, offers two types of examination: a general examination and a recommendation-based examination. The general examinations are held every year in late August and early February. The recommendation-based examination is held only for the first stage of the doctoral program (master's program) annually in July. Students who have obtained A grades for about 70% or more of the units acquired at their undergraduate school can apply to take the recommendation-based examination. The general examination is divided into three selection categories: one for general applicants, one for mature applicants, one for carrer-up in Library and Information Science, and one for international students.
The Library and Information Science Carrer-Up Program is provided only at the Tokyo Satellite Campus, and intended for information specialists who have at least three years of work experience and who wish to study without leaving the current job. Those who have worked for more than three years (they do not need to be working at the time of application) or those sent by their companies (length of service is irrelevant) are eligible as mature applicants. International students may write a document describing their research activities etc. in English and may take their oral examination in English, if they request this when filing their applications. Alternatively, we have an English Masters course for international students.
For those who apply from abroad: Japanese university's admission system can be different from your country in the following way:
Application forms are currently only avalable in Japanese for both Masters and PhD programs, except the LIS English program.

The Graduate School for Library, Information and Media Studies aims to develop a new academic field that transcends the division between arts and sciences. The first stage of the doctoral program (master's program) accepts students from diverse academic fields, regardless of their college of origin or undergraduate specialty, and the second stage of the doctoral program (doctoral program) accepts students from diverse academic fields, regardless of their major in the master's program. The graduate school recruits students with a strong desire to study and perform research, regardless of their field, personal history, age, or nationality.
Those who are approved as having the same level of ability as a college graduate are qualified to apply for the first stage of the doctoral program (master's program). In addition, those who are approved as having the same level of ability as a student with a master's degree are qualified to apply for the second stage of the doctoral program (doctoral program). Those who seek admission with the same level of ability as a student with a master's degree are required to sit a qualifying examination before filing an application. The qualification examination is free and the examination is only made on the basis of the submitted documents.
In the recommendation-based examination for the first stage of the doctoral program (master's program), applicants are required to submit documents about their research activities etc., and a recommendation letter written by their university president or the dean of their undergraduate school. They are then required to take an oral examination. In the general examination for the first stage of the doctoral program (master's program), selection is made on the basis of the submitted documents, TOEIC (includes TOEIC-IP test) or TOEFL (includes TOEFL-ITP<Level 1>) score, and the result of an oral examination. In the general examination for the second stage of the doctoral program (doctoral program), selection is made on the basis of the submitted documents and the result of an oral examination. In the oral examinations (about 30 minutes for each applicant for the first stage; about 60 minutes for each applicant for the second stage), applicants are required to give a presentation (7 minutes for the first stage; 15 minutes for the second stage) that summarizes their research activities and purpose.
Each applicant for the second stage of the doctoral program (doctoral program) is required to mention a research instructor of his/her own choice on the application documents. (This is not required for first stage applicants, because they select their research instructor after admission). Since the application documents must be submitted about a month before the entrance examination, each applicant needs to contact a prospective research instructor and finalize the discussion of his/her research theme in advance.
