Fully air-conditioned rooms are reserved for graduate students. They are equipped with desks, PCs and printers. Some rooms are used by graduate school students only and the others are used by undergraduate and graduate school students together. Seminars are offered in professors' offices or other rooms of the four research groups. The integrated circuit card that the students obtain after admission is used to enter the rooms and the library of the Graduate School of Library, Information and Media Studies, even at night and during holidays, and to operate the copiers. Upon application, students may obtain their own e-mail addresses and space for building websites. They may also use the abundant computer resources.
Many first stage (master'program) students complete a lot of units in the first year of the program, thus allowing them reduce the number of classes that they take in the second year. The students themselves and their research instructors should decide the best balance between research activities and class studies.
No items are predetermined. Please read the guide for the application.
As applicants for the second stage (doctoral program) are required to mention their research instructors on the application documents for the entrance examination, the applicants need to contact their instructors in advance. With respect to applicants for the first stage (master's program), their research instructors are decided after admission. However, the applicants may contact faculty members for advice about their research themes, even before admission. The faculty members' email addresses are listed on the "faculty members" web page (here). The Inquiry Form (here) may also be helpful for requesting their email addresses. However, please note that consultation about the content of the admission examinations is not permitted.
There is no stipulated limit. However, if many students wish to have the same research instructor, some students may be required to choose a different research instructor.
The students enrolled in the first stage program (master's program) are expected to decide their research instructors by the end of the April after admission. The four research groups will hold related orientations at the beginning of the first year, and then the research instructors requested by the students will arrange interviews.
Working students may complete the graduate school program by taking courses at the Tokyo Satellite Campus while continuing to work. But as the graduate school is not an evening school, students must attend some daytime classes. In addition, they must usually take the experiment and seminar courses (compulsory subjects, six credits) at the Tsukuba Campus. If these courses are offered at the Tokyo Satellite Campus, the students do not have to travel to Tsukuba. In summary, students must participate in courses at the Tsukuba Campus on about 10 weekdays per trimester, or about 30 weekdays per year. However, this requirement may vary according to the student's desired research group.
Students may take evening courses at the Tokyo Satellite Campus, which are offered by evening graduate schools of the University of Tsukuba. Some of the obtained units may be accepted as credits for completing the Graduate School of Library, Information and Media Studies program.
