Admission Qualifications

The Graduate School for Library, Information and Media Studies aims to develop a new academic field that transcends the division between arts and sciences. The master's program accepts students from diverse academic fields, regardless of their college of origin or undergraduate specialty, and the doctoral program accepts students from diverse academic fields, regardless of their major in the master's program. The graduate school recruits students with a strong desire to study and perform research, regardless of their field, personal history, age, or nationality.

Those who are approved as having the same level of ability as a college graduate are qualified to apply for the master's program. In addition, those who are approved as having the same level of ability as a student with a master's degree are qualified to apply for the doctoral program. Those who seek admission with the same level of ability as a student with a master's degree are required to sit a qualifying examination before filing an application. The qualification examination is free and the examination is only made on the basis of the submitted documents.

Selection Methods

In the recommendation-based examination for the master's program, applicants are required to submit documents about their research activities etc., and a recommendation letter written by their university president or the dean of their undergraduate school. They are then required to take an oral examination. In the general examination for the master's program, selection is made on the basis of the submitted documents, TOEIC (includes TOEIC-IP test) or TOEFL (includes TOEFL-ITP<Level 1>) score (this is not required for Career UP program applicants), and the result of an oral examination. In the general examination for the doctoral program, selection is made on the basis of the submitted documents and the result of an oral examination. In the oral examinations (about 30 minutes for each applicant for the first stage; about 60 minutes (in the recommendation-based examination, 30 minutes) for each applicant for the second stage), applicants are required to give a presentation (7 minutes for the first stage; 15 minutes for the second stage) that summarizes their research activities and purpose.

For the doctoral program, each applicant is required to mention the preferred choice of dissertation supervision on the application documents. (This is not required for applicants of the recommendation-based examination.) Since the application documents must be submitted about the month before the entrance examination, each applicant needs to contact a potential supervisor and finalize his/her research theme, before the application submission.
