Research interests focus around history of library and information media. In order to build a better future for libraries, it is essential that we have not only the understanding about the current situation of libraries, but also the knowledge about the history of libraries. I try to approach the history of libraries and information media from the standpoint of infrastructure for knowledge information.
I have studied the media theories of Masakazu NAKAI(1900-52), the first vice-director of the National Diet Library, from the viewpoints of intellectual history, so as to contribute to construction of the basis of our communication theories.
My research concerns social and cultural studies for libraries, information and media. I am interested in the following: social historical studies on the developments of libraries and reading practices in the 19th and 20th centuries in Japan, Germany and Britain; and comparative studies of contemporary Japan, Germany and Britain on libraries, media and reading practices.
I study legal issues related to processing information, especially with a focus on privacy and personal information protection law, through a comparative law approach. Also, I'm interested in structuring of information law with consideration of cross-sectoral legal study, emerging trend and international situation.

About Intellectual Property Law system mainly on Patent Act, Design Act, Trademark Act, Copyright Act and Unfair Competition Prevention Act, I perform the consideration of the legal problem, law interpretation and the precedent study. Especially, about Patent Act, I study the appeal examination system and the cancellation suit as for the patent, that is, I analyze the present condition to consider the subject and the View. Furthermore, about the legal problem concerning both Intellectual Property Law and recent digital information technology, I consider the subject and the solution.
My research concerns policy of higher education and policy of culture. On policy of higher education, I am very interested in adult learning and distance learning on post-secondary education in Japan and North America. And, on culture policy, I am currently studying the relationship between multiculturalism and library and museum in North America.

In studying the principles of communication, before ‘information’ can be sent from someone (i.e., sender) to the other (i.e., receiver), the one needs to constitute some kind of relationship with ‘the Other’ and construct the mutual understanding, as well as the empathic base for the communication. I regard these elements as the basis for communication. Focusing on not only the linguistic phase but also the non-verbal phases, body language, and various usages of senses, I am mainly studying the potentiality of ‘interspecies communication’ (i.e., the communication between humans and non-human animals and plants).
Research interests: new approaches to the knowledge formation from data. Current interests include: detection of protein active site by comparison of protein 3D structure data; analyses of knowledge in biology and chemistry; prediction of mood states after reading novels for the mood states based book reference system; development and evaluation of creative methods and knowledge formation methods.
Study local history in Japanese from 16th to 19th century and its fundamental materials such as topographies. Conduct research on history and methods of function, interpretation, research, preservation and use of historical materials. Currently, interested in theories and practical issues to preserve and use the records and memories in local communities in the future, and consider all the various factors together while learning from the experiences of archival sciense or museology.
Main studies are about works such as "waka" and "renga" of the Edo period of Japan, and about the author. In addition, I visit the library all over Japan, and examine about the Japanese old book held there. In recent years, it is interested in the illustration of the book published at the Edo period, and examine is advanced.
My theme of study is to investigate the nature of knowledge and the possibility of common knowledge from an analytical philosophical point of view. For example, this is to consider the relationship between knowledge and realism, and to consider issues of relativism etc. Also, recently, I am very interested in inquiring the truth of stored knowledge in relation to the above stated theme.

I research school library media centers and their cooperation with public libraries from two directions of library and information science and education. My interesting themes are systems supporting school library media centers, school library media center’s management and evaluation, information literacy and library use education mainly in Japan and United States of America.

I am studying the significance, the services, uses,and management of public libraries, education of librarians, laws and regulations, budget, administration, and policies regarding public libraries from the viewpoint of local community and municipal government. The main results are on qualifications and certifications required for librarians, improvement of reference services, and evaluation of library movements.
Primary research is local autonomy system of Japan. Especially, new public management (NPM) such as policy evaluation system and PFI, which is introduced under the change of the environment surrounding the local autonomies caused by municipal mergers and regional decentralization, is focused.
On the human resource management in public libraries in the United States of America, studies have been continued with a view point of separation of professional and nonprofessional duties. Based on the above studies, further studies have been made on the adequate mode of library staff’s duties in public libraries and academic libraries in Japan. Moreover, studies are made on new movements in the field of reference and information services in the mentioned libraries.

I have been researched on the system, institution and technique to communicate science and technology information to the public precisely, clearly and plainly. In other words, on the system, institution and technique to show or display the information most suitably to the objects in communication, considering their conditions. Concretely,those are technical communication.
Recently I work on studies regarding the actual use of printed/visual/electronic media, and the effects of use of these media for children and adolescents. As printed media, I select books, newspapers, and comic books. Also, as visual/electronic media, video games, television, and the Internet are used. I examine the effects of these media on academic and interpersonal/psychological aspects.
I am doing the research that clarifies what factors decide the use of public libraries by empirical (statistical) method. I am also doing the research that shed light on how to measure the efficiency of public libraries.
Main research field is to organize information and information resources through creating and managing metadata (surrogates, bibliographic records, annotation, tags, etc.) of information resources. Metadata design (requirements analysis, conceptual modeling, schema design, etc.) and system development for supporting creation and utilization of metadata are major focuses. I am doing research on library- buildings in a digital-information society. As digitalization of knowledge and information-transfer is thriving, libraries have been forced to change themselves regardless of their specialties. I examine how libraries and library-building should keep up with the times, focusing mainly on planning and design. Specifically, I am working on trends of libraries in Scandinavian countries and England that are advanced in keeping up with digitalization. I also practice attitude surveys to librarians and users in domestic libraries.
The main research topics are 1) Empirical research on the function of Scandinavian public libraries as places of lifelong learning; 2)Historical research on the philosophy and practices of American public libraries; and 3)Theoretical study on the local citizen involvement with public libraries in Japan.

We have been studying a new optical fiber, for example, a holey fiber, which has much higher capacity than that of conventional single-mode fiber to meet a demand for greater capacity caused by the explosive growth in Internet traffic. We also study high-power endurance of optical fibers to avoid high-power induced catastrophic damages of optical transmission systems.
Theoretical study of the condensed matter physics and development of the band calculation systems. Knowledge representations and advanced information accesses are quite emerging research issues in the information-networking era. We research and develop the knowledge extracting, sharing, converging, and transforming technologies to perceive the information space.
My research interests lie in the area of information access technologies (IAT) from texts such as news, web, etc., and in particular, sentiment analysis, summarization, and multilingual application. Recent work includes collaborative annotation technologies based on collective intelligence, cross media (or cross document genre) IAT, and evaluations on IAT.

Information Physics: The properties of information processing due to the physical laws governing the information media, e.g., the relationship between information theory and the laws of physics. 2. Foundation of quantum mechanics: The conceptual and quantitative difference between quantum and classical mechanics, e.g., (a)the nature of the quantum-classical transition, especially in the chaotic systems, and (b)the application to information processing.
His current research interests include structured documents such as XML, e.g. constructing efficient algorithms for inferring XML transformations from schema update and for solving XPath satisfiability problem. The computational complexities of the problems are also considered.
I am working on statistical language models which uncover the semantic structure of a large document set by applying machine learning techniques. Computer simulation has been used in many areas. I study computer graphics technology based on Physics simulation to achieve realistic representation of natural phenomena. My research topics include computer animations, interactive applications and augmented reality interfaces.

His current research topics include: 1) speech coding, recognition, and retrieval in universal phonetic code domain, 2) speech analysis and voice morphing based on speech production models, 3) music signal analysis and recognition, and 4) active control of sounds.
